TAO’s First Vocal Group for Seniors
It was Recital Day. The singers were seated, wearing black and white. Vocal coach Caroline Murphy Turco was warming up, greeting participants and checking lyrics pages. Singers smiled and said ‘hi’ to one another in greeting; looks of excitement were evident. Some participants were present one minute, then gazing absently away the next – a sign of their dementia. The large community room was filling up quickly. Continue reading

Visual Arts Workshop for Moms and Kids in Shelter – by Elizabeth Cunningham, M.S.
Family homeless shelters are challenging places to present programs. Common areas are small, families are ‘in crisis’ by the time they end up in shelter, and children, moms and staff handle large stress-loads daily. For all of these reasons, it is difficult for TAO to allow observers to these programs. This report offers a glimpse into how our programs augment the lives of women and children in transition. Toward a better understanding of dementia
Half the people in nursing homes suffer from Alzheimers’ disease or related dementia. I the hate this statistic, as much as I hate that dreadful disease. It means that far too many talented people will be robbed, little by little, … Continue reading

Diary of a Sing-a-Long for Seniors with Dementia
When I arrived at the memory care facility, 11 residents were seated in the front living room, in a circle around the perimeter. Almost everyone smiled in greeting; one man was vacantly absent. A young, smiling and empathetic staff-person wheeled … Continue reading

Repost from TAO Artist Zach Bridges
Repost from TAO Artist Zach Bridges
Zach Bridges writes eloquently about his experience as a TAO artist at a Portsmouth, VA nursing home. Using lessons learned from our artist manual and coupling it with his own talents and tenacity, he created some intimate and very special moments for deserving, yet under-served seniors in our community. Kudos to Zach! and encouragement to all our artists to always strive to connect with the participants in your program. They are just like you and me, only older.

Old Man in a Nursing Home Reacts to Hearing Music from His Era
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NKDXuCE7LeQ&sns=fb
This speaks so well to the power of music to stimulate us emotionally, intellectually, physically and spiritually… it’s just amazing to see this reaction. TAO artists see it with great regularity!
